Welcome to the Teaching Students with Disabilities course. The focus of this course is to provide educators with introductory information about the foundations of exceptional student education in Florida, the provision of services, and appropriate instructional practices for students with disabilities. This course is not intended to replace a course of study for teacher certification in Exceptional Student Education.
Your local Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System – Professional Development Alternatives (FDLRS PDA) coordinator will submit a quarterly report of completers to the appropriate school districts/organizations. This course is comprised of five content units, an overview, and a conclusion. Each unit includes objectives, content, activities, check your knowledge questions, required reading, and supplemental resources. External links support the topics.
Teacher Helping a Student
The content units are:
Unit 1: Federal Legislation and State Process
Provides a brief historical overview of the federal laws, guiding principles, and the impact of legislation on the education of students with disabilities. An introductory review of the exceptional education policies and processes is also included.
Unit 2: Understanding Disabilities and Models of Support
Provides information on categories of disabilities, characteristics, and educational implications; along with disability specific resources to promote understanding and student success. Information on models of support used in assisting students with disabilities in accessing general education curricula is also provided.
Unit 3: The Responsive Classroom
Explores the principles and guidelines of differentiating instruction and Universal Design for Learning that proactively provide an environment aligned to individual learner needs.
Unit 4: Differentiated Environments
Provides some resources that support a universally designed and differentiated environment.
Unit 5: Explicit and Intensive Instruction
Introduces instructional design principles and teacher delivery methods that increase the explicitness and intensity of instruction and intervention.
